The real history and roots of ancient Kamasutra:

There are many books on the subject of love, written in every time period in almost every civilization but the most detailed and magnificent one is the Sanskrit literature from ancient India - The Kamasutra by Mallanga vatsyayana.

In this second article of mine on kamashastra we will learn about the real history of Kamsutra, because Vatsyayana was not the first person to write about this, in fact he had mentioned in his writing that he is taking references of some other ancient scholars for his writing. So if we see Kamasutra is a series of writing done by different writers in different eras, isn’t this so amazing? Yes it is.

So as we know there are three purusharth one need to maintain for a fulfilling life, Dharma, Artha and Kama. These three were taught and described by three different magnificent beings.

Dharma: was taught by Swayambhu Manu

Artha: was taught by Brihaspati himself

Kama: was first taught by Mahadeva’s disciple Nandikeshvara

So we are going to focus on Kama here:

So Nandikeshvara wrote it in a 1000 parts, covering up every detail, every aspect of it in a very magical way (I can just imagine how beautiful it would have been)

Later on Shvetaketu, who was son of sage uddalaka wrote and narrowed it down to 500 canons.

Further in the journey Babhravya summarized the writing. It is said that Babhravya was from panchal.

On demand of the courtesan of patliputra, dutta wrote about it further.

Later on a version of kamasutra book was written by Charya

Suvarnabai: He mostly give the long list of sexual positions ( a name for those who search for kamasutra book summary with pictures , (just kidding every name here on anywhere in history is important.)

Ghotak mukha: He talked a lot about how to approach unmarried female

And many more, the list goes on. So we can say that kamasutra book was not just a book, kamsutra was actually a system of knowledge transferred from one generation to another.

So Vatsyayana compiled up seven different writing into one book and simplified it, those seven different writing were as follow:

  1. Sadharna: which is about general principles of life and it was writing of Charayana
  2. Samprayogika: which describes the love play, about the sexual union of two partners, written by Suvarnanabha
  3. Kanya Samprayuktaka: this is about courtship and marriage written by Gotkamukha
  4. Bharyadhikarika: very focused on wife written by Gonardiya
  5. Paradarika: is about seducing the wife of others written by Gonikaputra
  6. Vaishika: which provides amazing details on the topic of courtesans written by Dattaka
  7. Aupanishadika: talks about secret love, sexual power and amazing stimulations written by Kuchumara

These writings by different scholars were not just matter or tradition, this is something which was very consciously developed as an art, that’s one of the reasons the kamasutra book was a gem for every ancient library.

So if we see closely kamsutra is about the art of living, how one should, and can live at fullest. It taught about how men should behave in society.

The Kamasutra is not just about males or females, it also talks about the third gender called tritiya shreni (the third gender), it seems that people other than male or female were not seen as a sin. They had their respectable place in society as everyone else, something our modern day society needs to learn that life is above gender. I would like you to know that this was the time when Ganika was a part of system in very beautiful way (Ganika or courtesan, or with what we compare them today is prostitute).

They were not just medium for paid sex, a ganika’s house or place was way more than that. Thry were kind of institution where people usually go for entertainment and entertainment don’t constricts itself to sexual pleasure only, it was more about the art likes singing, dancing, music and more (will cover this in detail in some other article, want to learn more check my youtube videos here LINK) Modern societies had just started talking about the life of sex worker, we had a very well developed system, that too thousands of year ago to provide necesaary rights and respectful place to ganikas. (I gets goosebumps just by imagining such well-crafted, deep rooted society)

A man could have wife/ wifes or courtesan, both institutions were running parallel without friction, the marriage institution as well as the courtesan institution. Similarly the kamashastra also mentions that if a female has a medium to live by herself, she does not need to marry, it’s her individual choice. Look, a lot of things can be misunderstood if not talked properly and this is one such subject. Here we are talking about a complete ancient society, a structure which was there for ages, decades. But surely there are clear signs that show Indian history was way more than what we are taught today, a true gem to read about.

A lot is still remaining to talk about, to know about our ancient Indian civilization, about the Kamasutra. Surely, together you and I will cover it, step by step because for a bright future one must know his past and that’s what we are doing here.
